Grain Co. Fined $550K

Earlier this month, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration ordered a Wisconsin grain company to pay a fine of $550,000 and increase safety training for employees after a list of safety violations in August 2010.

According to reports, the Burlington-based Cooperative Plus, Inc. received citations for 14 willful, 23 serious and two other safety violations. OSHA noted lack of proper equipment and procedures, which exposed workers to the danger of being engulfed in storage bins.

The citations go back to earlier in 2010 when a worker was buried up to his chest in frozen soybeans for four hours. He survived, but the incident brought OSHA out to examine the plant. They also found other plants failed to test the air for hazardous chemicals as well as failed to have an adequate emergency plan.
