OSHA Cites Vinton Construction Co. For Five Violations

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Manitowoc utility contractor Vinton Construction Co. for five citations of safety violations.

The company received four serious safety violations and one willful violation for failing to protect workers from cave-ins while performing trenching operations to install water main lines in Brookfield. The company is facing possible penalties of $95,040 from the OSHA inspection.

According to the OSHA press release, the willful safety violation carried a proposed penalty of nearly $70,000 and was cited because the company failed to protect workers installing water mains in a trench approximately six feet below water grade. OSHA standards require all excavations five feet or deeper be protected against collapse.

The company was also cited for four serious violations, which included not keeping excavated equipment at least two feet from the edge of the excavation.

The company has two weeks to pay the fines, contest the allegations or request a meeting with OSHA.
