OSHA Fines Eau Claire Company $105,000 For Violations

An Eau Claire manufacturing company was fined $105,000 by Occupational Safety and Health Administration for violations found after a worker’s thumb was crushed by a hydraulic power press.

According to the OSHA press release, a Curt Manufacturing LLC employee’s thumb was crushed July 25 while he was bending a metal part between the unguarded dies of the brake. The worker’s thumb had to be medically amputated.

OSHA said the company was still operating the unguarded press brake when they began their inspection mid-August. That violation may cost the company $70,000 and is listed as a willful violation, which is one “committed with intentional, knowing or voluntary disregard for the law’s requirements, or plain indifference to employee safety and health.”

Seven additional violations, five serious safety violations along with two others could cost the company $35,000 in fines.

The company is given 15 days from the time they receive information on the citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference or contest the findings before an independent OSHA commission.
