OSHA Penalties Often Reduced, Minimal In Employee’s Death

A review of penalties companies who had an employee die in Wisconsin show that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration rarely issued severe penalties.

The review, conducted by the Gannett Wisconsin Media and reported in several Gannet-owned newspapers, found that in a review of 240 workplace fatalities in more than an 11 year period, OSHA often imposed small fines and often negotiated even smaller penalties than originally issued.

The review showed out of 184 death cases, companies faced about $4,200 in fines during that period. Employer settlements reduced about two-thirds of OSHA’s original penalties for many companies.
