Berlin Iron Foundry Cited By OSHA For 9 Safety Violations

A Wisconsin iron foundry was cited for nine violations, including two repeat violations during a follow-up inspection this week.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited the Berlin, Wis. location of  Grede Wisconsin Subsidaries LLC for the violations, which carry with them a $56,320 penalty.

According to OSHA, the citations are from a May inspection, which was a follow-up to an August 2010 inspection. OSHA said employers cited for repeat violations show a “lack of commitment to workers’ well-being.”

The two repeat violations were operating a grinder with a missing guard and failing to have a cover on an electrical junction box. They are considered repeat violations because they were cited for similar violations in August 2010.

The other seven serious violations included fall hazards from unguarded, open-sided platforms, a lack of fall protection equipment, failing to correct unsafe crane conditions, failing to properly guard machines’ nip points and chain sprockets. Serious violations cite problems that could result in death or serious harm and are ones an employer knew or should have known about.

The company has 15 business days to comply, request a formal conference or contest the findings.
