Union Grove-Based Company Faces $60K OSHA Fine

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Wilkomm Excavating & Grading Inc. with two willful violations for failing to protect workers from trench cave-ins at a Greenfield job site. The Union Grove based company faces $60,500 in fines for the violation.

According to OSHA, they began an investigation January 5 after receiving a complaint. Workers were connecting water lines to the city water mains in a trench that was deeper than six feet deep and the workers were not removed when conditions appeared that could have resulted in a cave-in.

OSHA requires that all trenches five feet deep or greater should be protected against a collapse. Wilkomm Excavating & Grading Inc. was cited twice before, in 2005 and 2009 for violating the trenching protection standards.

The company has 15 business days from receiving the citation to request a conference, contest the findings or pay the fines.
