Driver Killed When Crane Collapses At Construction Site

A man died Thursday morning and another was injured when a crane collapsed while doing construction on the Lake Butte des Morts Bridge.

The accident occurred about 9 a.m. According to reports, a 35-year-old man from Green Bay died at the construction site on U.S. 41. He was a driver for Spancrete, a Waukesha-based company and was delivering beams, made by Spancrete, to the construction site. The man died on the scene.

A second person, said to be a 33-year-old man who was the crane driver, was seriously injured in the accident. He was a employee of Lunda Construction Co., based in Black River Falls.

The $54 million project for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation is planned to continue.

Local authorities, along with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the accident.

Several lanes were closed for less than an hour after the accident and everything was reopened by 10 a.m.

This is the second fatal accident Lunda Construction Co. is under investigation for this year. In April, a 58-year-old Black River Falls construction worker died after he was pinned beneath a crane arm. OSHA said in May the investigation into that death may take several more months.
